New tech to digitise cable TV

New Delhi, Oct 17 Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), in its recommendations submitted on Wednesday to the information and broadcasting ministry (I&B) for implementation of headend-in-the-sky (HITS) services has sought foreign investment cap of 74% like in the telecom sector and an entry fee of Rs 10 crore with a minimum net worth requirement of Rs 40 crore to ensure that only serious players get HITS license.

HITS is a satellite-based platform for delivering multi-channel television signals to cable operators across the country with the objective of digitising cable television. The technology is capable of delivering TV signals in digital form. It enables cable operator to uplink signals from broadcasters to his HITS satellite from which other cable operators can downlink signals for further distribution to the subscribers.

Since the HITS satellite will have country-wide footprint, around 60,000 cable operators who serve nearly 70 million cable TV homes will benefit.
